Subject: [Sca-List] OT: not period, but...

This spring Alexandre has decided to participate in our homeschool
group's Young Chautauquans program. In case you are not familiar with
this, the Chautauquans is a national organization that teaches history
through living history :-) Generally, they are engaged as speakers at
events and portray a particular person, telling stories and answering
questions as their persona. Some examples of this are an upcoming CU
Museum event featuring Marie Curie (the performer of whom is actually
our group's coach) and the characters you run into at the Titanic
exhibit. The Young Chautauquans is the same thing, only with kids ages
9-18. Their program involves four months of personal research on a
chosen character and group meetings to help develop a 5-20 minute
monologue in character, to be delivered to an audience with a
consecutive question and answer period. This final performance will
happen sometime in May (the date will be determined in February). The
scholar is strongly encouraged to hold at least two practice
performances for the public before this performance.

This is kind of where Caer Galen comes in. I was hoping that I could
plead for Alexandre to perform for the barony, perhaps at a fighter
practice, sometime in late April. He is very comfortable around all of
you, and this is a great leap for him as he generally suffers from the
same horrible shyness his mother does. It's not period, though only
slightly not so: his chosen character is Ludwig Van Beethoven. You may
or may not also be subjected to my less-than-shy daughter pandering
about as Mrs. Claus. She's not old enough to participate in the
program, but we're doing a "junior Chautauquan" thing to appease the
younger set and apparently she has decided to be Mrs. Claus...although
honestly that could change come January when the program actually
starts. Either way, I'd expect she would want to get up and parade
herself around in front of everyone if her brother gets to do it.

In closing, I was also wondering if anyone had any good references for
Alexandre to study in his pursuit of becoming Beethoven. It appears our
homeschool library is sorely lacking in the area of great composers :P
Resources can be either films (please do not suggest _Immortal Beloved_
as I think it contains some themes a bit too mature for him), books,
websites, or any particular pieces you find particularly moving (we have
#9 covered)...as long as it's all a proper resource. NOT wiki.

Much thanks. Bonus points for anyone who can point me to French heels
for men (for purchase, as the performances are done in costume as well
as character).
